I was a product manager at the AT&T Foundry in Palo Alto and at Rakuten. I also spent years running innovation programs for startups. Same work, roughly, from two very different sides.
Big companies have the distribution, the money and the customers, and almost no tolerance for the thing not working the first time. Small companies have the opposite of all four. This is about what each one is actually good at, and what I got wrong about both.
